Leonora Hamill: " Art in Progress "

from AnOther

“Art in Progress features a selection of images from Hamill’s extensive exploration of art schools across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Her photographic series of empty studios contributes to a greater understanding of the vital role contemporary art plays in an ever more global cultural dialogue. Her images, shot with a large format camera, allow the viewer to imagine the artistic experimentations that took place in these schools.”

Nate Harrison
Can I Get An Amen?
(2004)

“Can I Get An Amen? is an audio installation that unfolds a critical perspective of perhaps the most sampled drum beat in the history of recorded music, the Amen Break. It begins with the pop track Amen Brother by 60’s soul band The Winstons, and traces the transformation of their drum solo from its original context as part of a ‘B’ side vinyl single into its use as a key aural ingredient in contemporary cultural expression. The work attempts to bring into scrutiny the techno-utopian notion that ‘information wants to be free’- it questions its effectiveness as a democratizing agent. This as well as other issues are foregrounded through a history of the Amen Break and its peculiar relationship to current copyright law.” Nate Harrison

monochrom
Kiki and Bubu and The Good Plan
(2008)

“monochrom is an art-technology-philosophy group of basket weaving enthusiasts and theory do-it-yourselfers having its seat in Vienna and Zeta Draconis.
monochrom is the super-affirmation of the globalization trap.
monochrom has existed in this (and every other) form since 1993.

monochrom is an unpeculiar mixture of proto-aesthetic fringe work, pop attitude, subcultural science and political activism. Among their projects, monochrom has released a leftist retro-gaming project, established a one baud semaphore line through the streets of San Francisco, started an illegal space race through Los Angeles, buried people alive in Vancouver, and cracked the hierarchies of the art system with the Thomann Project. In Austria they ate blood sausages made from their own blood in order to criticize the grotesque neoliberal formation of the world economy. Sometimes they compose melancholic pop songs about dying media and they have hosted the first annual festival concerned with cocktail robotics.

monochrom’s mission, its passion and quasi-ontological vocation, is primarily the collection, grouping, registration and querying (liberation?) of the scar tissue represented by everyday cultural artifacts. This mission is conducted everywhere, but first and foremost in culture-archeological digs into the seats (and pockets) of ideology and entertainment.”

Hennesy Youngman
ART THOUGHTZ: Performance Art
(2011)

“Hennessy Youngman is a persona invented and performed by Jayson Musson.[1]

Youngman appears in direct-address to the Internet at large in online episodes of a series titled “Art Thoughtz.” Most often, Youngman, takes on the role of art critic or cultural critic[2]while speaking to topics concerning art, race, gender, and popular culture.

In his video monologues, Youngman becomes a tutor to an audience of hopeful artists in search of success. By explaining traditional art concepts and relating them to pop culture and real world examples, he is able to expose issues and conflicts within contemporary art society. A scheme is perpetuated, through Youngman and the “Art Thoughtz” videos, of following an often sympathetic character, one who is apparently outside the art world, attempting to understand and permeate a seemingly exclusive cultural society.” via wikipedia
